The “Chronicles” which Mario Lodi manages since several years on the “Calendar of the Bosina Family” state in date 27th of March 1970: “At the Sacro Monte, for initiative of the general vicar of the ambrosian diocese, bishop Maggioni, a restoration laboratory was started.
“some nuns are working followed by the restorator Carlo Alberto Lotti. The final purpose: to save art from being ruined”.
The laboratory was actually opened in 1969. Altough the writer declares the date of the opening as the one they told the media.
First between all, the daily newspaper “La Prealpina”, admninistrated by Lodi, then the weekly newspaper “Luce” and finally the Italian Swisse canton Television realized made a video on the spot.
It has been already fourty years from that moment and the laboratory has always been operative.
Lotti was working in the silence, perfecting his technique with the awareness of having created an activity orientated to never be forgotten and to become tradition.
From the first working place, in some of the rooms of the monastery, the nuns move to the upper floor in the unused church built in 1400 and dedicated to the Annunciata and to the Transfiguration. In the XVII century the church was divided to create rooms for guests.
When the nuns though of using that space as renewed church of the Transfiguration and to give the education complex the function of spiritual centre, the laboratory had his definitive allocation, in the area of strict seclusion.
In thirty years many art pieces have been restored by the nuns. Paintings, statues, frescos and any kind of art in need of attention.
Every piece of art has been catalogued and photographed.
The nuns in the monastery give a lot of attention to the conservation of the artistic heritage, earning this way the time to think and loose themselves in their thoughts.
Not only the nuns directly interested, but the all community thinks the restoration has to be done by prepared expert hands.
Every operation on an art piece has to be well thought and well planned. The reality, history and technique used before are to be aknowledge previously. Respect for science, transience of the piece and personality of the creator are the keys to succeed.
